We have a cottage for sale; 4 Ropehaugh Cottages in Allenheads, Northumberland. We would really like it go to a good home (as it were!) as we are rather fond of it......the estate agent details can be viewed here:

However, we thought that any people who might be interested would like some additional info and photos about the property. We are moving to be closer to family, and to have a bit more space garden-wise.

Allenheads was a mining village, and many of the old lead and fluorspar mine remains can be seen still. This makes for interesting walking in the area; lots of places to explore, including some rather picturesque derelict cottages, as the population has decreased over the years.

Information about local activities and businesses can be found on the locally maintained Allen Valleys website http://www.allenvalleys.co.uk.

Allenheads, as a village, is tucked away in the hills, and offers a magical atmosphere, often attracting people looking for wildlife and rare flowers. There is a population of red squirrels, and deer can be seen on the woodlands above the village. In late spring, the road sides and edges of the moorland are bright with heartsease pansies, everyone with a different face, and later on, orchids can be seen, some of which are rarely found elsewhere.

The ski slope at the top end of the village can be a surprise to people who aren't familiar with the area. Allenheads is often snowy for long periods over the winter, although the roads are always kept clear of snow and well gritted. The cottage we are selling fronts the road, and is well situated for the snowplough in the winter! People who have lived in Allenheads a long time will happily tell you about winters past, and how the snow was always deeper then!

The nearest post box is next door, although Allendale town is the nearest post office. Handily, the service bus which runs frequently (to Hexham via Allendale) stops just outside.

Below are some photos of the garden - I am a very keen gardener, and one of the reasons we are selling the house is to move to somewhere with a larger garden (and also to be closer to family).
